Our final stop on our Indian journey was Delhi which was a bit unfortunate. We didnt even scratch the surface of what Delhi had to offer because we were both getting tired and running out of rupees.
For me Delhi was a bit overwhelming. Not because I saw anything new or different than what we had already seen but it seemed to be more drastic. It’s no secret that the economic gap in India is huge and that gap become very apparent in the capital.
We stayed in the backpackers area which unfortunately also boasts the title of the street kid district. Apparently runaways from all over india flock to this part of town. It wasn’t uncommon to see huge groups of kids wandering around aimlessly looking for food or money. To make matters worse they were usually high from sniffing some kind of gas or solvent. We had seen poverty throughout our stay in India but this was the worst we had seen it.
I think what made it harder to see was how quickly the area changed from rock bottom poor to upper middle class. A ten minute walk down the road lead us to Connaught Place where name brand stores and western restaurants lined the streets.
We wandered around the government buildings a Sikh temple and tried to go to Gandhi’s house (it was closed) before we took shelter from the rain. The government area was beautiful with old British style buildings and lawns.
I was and still am glad that we went to India. I saw and experienced things I will remember forever. But I’d be lying to say that I wasn’t thrilled to be getting on the plane. Three weeks on a small budget was as much as I could handle.
