One of the things that Jacob and I always had in common is that we both wanted to do some extensive traveling. Jacob has traveled East and has been to Europe a couple of times, as well as a short bout to South America. I have traveled West and have seen most of Canada.
Last summer we bought a house in Charlottetown, PEI and settled in quite nicely. This spring we both woke up and realized that if we didn’t change something, this, is what the rest of our lives was going to look like. After spending a year, and a bit, working we realized that even with a few weeks vacation it wasn’t enough to see and do the things we wanted to.
Instead, we decided to leave it all behind, for a short time anyway, and try our hands at something completely different. We threw around a few ideas. I was leaning heavily towards a year in England. Jacob wanted something a little more exciting, Africa was probably his top choice.
We finally decided to move to Korea (South that is) to teach English. There are a few reasons we settled on Korea, you can read the full list in my first post, but it’s mostly because it gives us the chance to completely experience a culture that is probably completely opposite to our own. That and it puts us on the other side of the world so that when we do decide to come home, we can see a lot of great places en route. Stay tuned for the itinerary.
One last note, which is almost completely unrelated. The name of the blog is Mr. & Mrs. Vandebilt. Mrs Vandebilt is a song by Paul McCartney that has become a sort of theme song for our adventure. The opening lyrics to the song are “Down in the jungle living in a tent. You don’t use money and you don’t pay rent. You don’t even know the time and you don’t mind.” The other lines of the song go on to say, “What’s the use of worrying, what’s the use of hurrying, what’s the use of anything.” These are lyrics that we’re going to make an effort to live by for the next while. This will be a lot easier for Jacob than for me.
Stay tuned for some hopefully entertaining encounters, leave behind your thoughts, and thanks for reading 🙂
