As part of our beach getaway we decided to spend some time on Langkawi. It’s a relatively small island off the west coast of Malaysia. I was not disappointed.
Since Malaysia was a British colony until the 50s it reminded me a lot of Hong kong. The people all spoke excellent English and it was just a bit more westernized than any of it’s neighbours. There was no longer dual pricing. We weren’t being ripped off and everyone was very friendly.
As an added bonus we had beautiful weather during our stay. We had a bungalow 5 minutes from a 6km stretch of white sandy beaches. The water was fairly clear and very warm. For 5 of the 6 days we did nothing but sit in the sun and read our books.
One of the days we rented a motorbike to do some touring. We covered most of the island in one day. Driving around on Langkawi was spectacular. The majority of the island is rainforest. We drove through the jungle listening to all the sounds of the birds and animals. The roads were winding as there are also quite a few mountains and if you peeked over the cliff through the trees you could see the bright blue water. As if that wasn’t magical enough we drove past dozens of monkeys just hanging out on the side of the road.
As part of our motorbike tour we went to Langkawis version of the experimental farm. We got to see how they grow pineapples mango papaya pomelo starfruit and dragonfruit. We got to eat as much as we wanted of all the fruit right off the trees.
Langkawi was exactly what I needed after traveling around for 2 months a chance to just sit and relax. It was a little bit of paradise.
That sounds absolutely heavenly Brynn! Any book recommendations to pass along?
