Almost everyday we see things or come across things that make us stop and wonder how anything gets accomplished here in Korea. The entire county seem so to operate on backwards/sideways logic, it’s similar to chaos theory but slightly more random. Last week however, I was proved wrong.
Laura and I spent the day bus hopping. We put a new spin on it this time and made up new rules as we went to decide when we would get off the bus. After ending up at the bus depot we hopped on another bus and decided we would get off with the first passenger. We then hopped on the next bus, bus 713, and initially decided we’d do the same thing but with the old woman wearing the rather large visor. We quickly changed our decision and decided instead to follow the man in the bright orange jacket.
Sure enough, the man in the orange jacket got off the bus first. We then hopped on the next bus to arrive at the stop. We decided to change things up a little for this next trip and said that after the bus made a turn and went 3 bus stops we’d get off. Being rule abiding players after this happened we got off. While waiting for the next bus to come, we passed up a few buses because they started with a 4 and we wanted a bus that started with an 8, this is when the bus 713 pulled up and sure enough the woman with the large visor hops off. Somehow the two people we picked on the bus would have had us arrive at the exact same location. Now how’s that for strange.
We took the 824 and decided this time to stay on for 10 minutes. At 5:11 we pushed the button and hopped off only to discover that we’ve come to this amazing part of Ulsan. We were on the top of a large hill that overlooked the entire city. We could see the Taehwa river snaking through the city and a phenomenal view of the skyline. We also stumbled upon a beautiful temple site (Baek-Yung-Sa) where we went for a little stroll.
So while most days Korea is frustratingly random, every once and a while we get these little gems where the randomness works in our favour.
