So far we have spent a lot of time telling stories about how different Korea is for us compared to home. What we haven’t been mentioning is how sometimes Korea can be a beautiful place to live. The scenery here can sometimes shock us with it’s beauty. You have probably been putting it together by looking at some of the pictures.
Growing up in a place like Prince Edward Island has raised our standards for beauty. At home sometimes we don’t realize how lucky we are to have such nice scenery. In our travels around and about Korea we can be blind to the wonderful countryside but every once in a while we are caught looking at a mountain or a beach that is nothing short of spectacular. The biggest difference is that at home we are always surrounded by nature. Here we have to get on a bus or a train to find the more beautiful and less populated areas.
One of our most recent revelations is just how lucky we are to be here teaching English. Our schedules here are basically wide open. We are also making a very good living by Korean standards. We have the freedom to get out and explore, especially on weekends, without any obligations to ‘accomplish’ anything. A day or weekend trip to a neighboring city (or country) is always a possibility. We have no prior commitments or agenda to adhere to. I think it has been good for both of us to get a chance to live a more relaxed lifestyle. I hope we can take some of this casualness home with us and maybe infect some others with the same freedom we are experiencing now. I would like to think that when we get back home we won’t feel as tied down by work and home because of what we’ve learned here.
