High Rollin in White Sands

Next up on the National Park tour is White Sands National Park. Because we have to drive fairly far out of our way to get to these parks we decided to stay a couple of days in the area to make it a little easier on everyone. In this particular case, we made the right call.

The house we had in High Rolls which is about 15 minutes of Alamogordo, the closest town to White Sands. It was up in the mountains that surround the town at an elevation of about 6500ft. I can’t say that we ever really got used to the elevation, loading and unloading the car had me breathing like a lifetime smoker, but the views were spectacular. We all felt really at home in the house and thoroughly enjoyed our time there.

Aside from spending a couple of days relaxing in our mountain house we got to visit White Sands National Park. While this may be a smaller park, it made a big impression. It’s made up of sparkling white gypsum sand. The dunes are high and stable enough that you can sled on them. The kids had a great time coasting down the dunes. We finished off with a little hike around one of the more diverse sections – before the dunes get so big that they covered all of the other landscapes.
