Swamp Life

A swamp tour seemed like a necessary thing to do while we were in Mississippi. We weren’t that far away from Honey Island Swamp and Dr. Wagner’s swamp tours so we gave them a call, made our reservations, made sure to have enough cash on hand since we didn’t have any personal cheques and set off.

The swamp tour took just over an hour and was actually super interesting. We learned that a swamp is just a flooded forest – a marsh is a flooded plain, that raccoons like to eat marshmallows and that all of the water in the Mississippi is all rain water. We also learned that there are a number of people that live on the swamp, by choice, and that it is a highly sought after life. You need a boat to get in, there’s a million alligators, you have to take in your drinking water with you and there’s a strong possibility of your house flooding. But I guess it a great time floating around on the river.

All in all we had a great day. The captain gave an amazing tour, was super patient with the kids and let them feed the raccoons. He even did water-donuts with the boat after Nora requested we spin in circles and to extra fast. I would say it would be much prettier at a different time of year but I won’t be rushing back to try and float down the swamp river.
