This is actually quite an old story now, but still a good one.
While Dad was visiting (in April) we headed to Andong to see Hahoe Village (하희믈). This is a working traditional village; it was really quite nice with lots of old traditional thatched roof houses, surrounded by mountains and a river with quite a bit of nature. We were also fortunate enough to get to see the Mask Dance performance as part of admission.
Now I’m sure I’ve mentioned before that living in Asia does wonders for your confidence. You’ll pretty much do anything at anytime because everyone is already staring at you so you might as well have a bit of fun with it. That, and you can’t understand what they are saying about you anyway. I had only finished telling this to Dad and Kayla a few days earlier when I had a chance to prove it.
During the traditional mask dance performance, a rather crazy (read drunk) woman was pulled out of the crowd to give the dance a shot. While she was dancing around she came up with the brilliant plan to also involve some of the Way-gook-ins (foreigners) in the crowd. So here we are, not really understanding what’s going on, but knowing that it was involving us somehow, when she approaches our group. I was the lucky chosen one, and was taken to the middle of this auditorium of about 500+ people while she assured me it would be fine by saying “dance miss monkey, dance”. And dance I did… well if that’s what you can call it.
Now, those of you who know me, should know that this is something I would have NEVER done at home. It wouldn’t have even been an option, but like I said in Korea anything goes. And for those of you who are wondering or hoping, yes there is a video, but no it’s not going on the internet.
