Happy Birthday Gimbap Man!
There is a restaurant below ELC where Jacob and I are teaching. The man that owns the restaurant speaks really great English and has really taken a liking to us because he has visited Canada a few times. Since our favourite snack from his restaurant is Gimbap (basically veggie sushi) we call him Gimbap man. Today was his birthday.
Jacob teaches his daughter everyday for an hour and she thought it would be nice if we stopped in to wish him a happy birthday. We dropped off a bottle of soju for our friend and passed along our good wishes. He then invited us in for some cake – which we had to take with us since we had to go back to teach but he invited us to come back after work for some fresh fishy (read raw mystery fish).
Janelie, Jacob and I went back for a late night snack only to be treated to a ton of food, lots of laughs, a few drinks and some great memories. He shared his birthday wine with us (viagara wine as he calls it) and Jacob had a glass of soju. We had some great noodles, good for health fishy, Ulsan pears and as promised, fresh fishy.
Every day in Korea is an adventure. Who would have thought I’d be celebrating a birthday with someone that I only know as Gimbap man and then having him shove us out the door with his birthday cake.
chum chum chum (…) everyday in Korea is an EVENT!! -random if I might add 😉 –
